Our recent kōrero on Co-existing Problems (CEP) was a powerful and insightful session that brought together voices from across the mental health and addiction sector. Together, we explored the complex and often misunderstood intersection of mental health, addiction, and wider wellbeing challenges that many tāngata whaiora experience.
We were privileged to be joined by Nicholas Cao (Le Va) and Jo Claridge (Whāraurau), who shared their extensive experience supporting the mental health and addiction workforce across Aotearoa. Their kōrero highlighted why recognising and responding to CEP is essential for building services that truly meet people where they are.
Nic also introduced Tu Tonu, Le Va’s cultural formulation tool, and demonstrated how it can strengthen assessment, engagement, and cultural responsiveness when working alongside Pasifika peoples. Through this lens, participants gained both clinical and cultural perspectives—learning practical strategies to deliver care that is safe, connected, person-centred, and grounded in cultural understanding.
Whether participants were new to CEP or refining their existing practice, this session offered valuable insights to take back into their mahi and further support the wellbeing of the communities they serve.
